This South-East Asian country, often overshadowed by its more high-profile neighbours, nevertheless offers one of the most profound and surprising travel experiences on the continent. Whether you're a lover of mysterious ruins, street food with explosive flavours, or simply looking to unwind in a hammock between two coconut palms, Cambodia has something for everyone. This mini-guide immerses you in a sensory and human adventure, from the temples of Angkor to the floating markets of the Mekong, not forgetting the confidential beaches of the Gulf of Thailand. Phnom Penh, the capital, and Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor, handle the majority of international flights. Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and Siem Reap International Airport (REP) are well connected via airlines such as Qatar Airways, Emirates and the very local Cambodia Angkor Air and Lanmei Airlines (yes, the name makes you want to order a cocktail). Once you're there, it doesn't take long for the magic to begin: tuk-tuks, motorbikes and minibuses bustle about in a cheerful mess. The drivers don't need GPS, just instinct and a well-placed horn. And that's where the charm begins: getting a little lost, trusting to chance, or at least to the driver's smile.

To get around within the country, buses are still the cheapest option, even if comfort is sometimes uncertain (don't be surprised if a chicken invites itself on board). Companies such as Giant Ibis and Mekong Express offer relatively comfortable journeys between the major cities. On the banks, the atmosphere is electric: people eat, sing, dance and cheer for their favourite team as if it were the final of the World Cup on the river. Siem Reap also hosts a number of cultural festivals throughout the year, including the Cambodia International Film Festival, the Festival of Lights, and shadow puppet shows and contemporary circus with the Phare troupe, an incredible fusion of social art and artistic prowess.

And then, sometimes, you just have to stumble across a village festival, a public birthday party, an impromptu parade... because in Cambodia, every day is potentially a celebration. This is not a country that can be explained with brochures. It's an emotion, a salutary slowness, a poetry of everyday life that sticks to your skin (and sometimes to your feet, if you've tried the barefoot rice paddies). You come for the temples, you come back for the people. You get lost in the dusty alleyways, find yourself in a silent pagoda. And you leave with one thing in mind: you haven't been dreaming, you've just tasted something rare.

So if you're looking for a destination that will amaze you, move you and teach you both humility and simple joy, let Cambodia capture your heart. It doesn't promise luxury around every corner, but it does offer you a much rarer luxury: that of truly living.

Magical temples, cheerful markets and secret beaches: Cambodia is a tropical poem to be experienced slowly, with your feet in the water and your heart open.

[489,49
["post-20047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cambodge","category-destinations
["GET
